… that the founder of the “mile high club” was also the inventor of the autopilot. LOL! I guess necessity really is the mother of invention.
Road Trip
It has been quite a while since my last post. The end of the quarter and wedding planning has taken all of my time. Theresa and I attended her cousin’s wedding in Ashland, spent some time at the Shakespeare festival and decided to continue on down to The People’s Liberal Socialist Republic of Democratistan (formally known as California). Our friends here planned a shower for Theresa and she plans to visit some family in the bay area as well. I’ll try to write more as soon as time allows.
UW College Republicans Know How to Party
Spent the evening with LRH and the UW College Republican Club at Wade’s Indoor Range in Bellevue. Free gun rentals, tons of ammo and free targets. T and I got to shoot Sigs, Glocks, XDs, and 1911s all chambered in 9mm. I brought my 45 and let some of the club members try it out after I convinced them it wasn’t going to explode. (A few of them were actually afraid of the 45’s recoil, but I assured them that if my fiancée can shoot 2 inch groups at 15 yards with it then they can hold the thing down range and pull the trigger. Speaking of which, T’s shooting was quite impressive. While some of the guys were cheering when they hit the paper, she was upset if she broke the 2″ mark on the bull’s eye. LOL.

Engagement Weekend + Photos
As promised I’m now going to share some photos from the weekend Theresa and I promised to spend the rest of our lives together. I had planned a romantic weekend in Leavenworth for some time before we went, but a nasty windstorm threatened to derail my plans. This storm left Seattle and the entire Puget Sound region without power for up to seven days. The island was also hit hard, leaving homes without power for four days, including my own. To further complicate matters, I had to finish grading my students’ final lab report the day the storm hit. I ended up taking Theresa with me to UW so I could finish it in the computer lab there. UW was unaffected by the storm – at least until I arrived. Soon after I started work the EE servers went down and Theresa and I were left wondering if we’d make it to Leavenworth that weekend at all. Fly Fishing the Tacoma Narrows
I just got back from a few days up in the Cascades fishing with my dad and my girlfriend. We hit the Snoqualmie river with dry flies and it was loads of fun! Granted we didn’t take anything home – but the joy of fly fishing is that even small fish put up a worthy fight. Yesterday the three of us joined up with my mom to fish the Puget Sound. We were at the Tacoma Narrows where Galloping Gertie was located. As an engineering student I learned about that bridge as an example of what not to do. We had a great time catching little bullheads but didn’t land anything big enough to take home. We’ll definitely be doing this again. I love the northwest!
Crater Lake Road Trip
Little Red Hen and I spent the weekend of the 4th in Oregon as we drove down to Medford to visit my sister and see Crater Lake. In fact, earlier in my blog I posted a picture of the lake as I flew over from 35,000 feet. After showing this picture to Theresa, we both agreed that we had to go back (we’ve both been before, but many years ago).
We decided to leave on Saturday and arrived in Shady Cove (near Medford) just in time to attend my sisters church. She goes to the Red Rock Cowboy Church which originally started out as a church service at the local rodeos but eventually settled down to its current location an old barn that has been converted into a church. The service itself was enjoyable and involved a lot of country worship songs, cowboy hats and guitars. During the collection they passed around a cowboy hat for donations. We both agree that the epitome of the Red Rock parishioner was this old cowboy we spotted who sported a skoal ring, wranglers, a large Red Rock Cowboy Church belt buckle and an oxygen tube that he had to remove in order to smoke. Snowshoeing at Snoqualmie Pass
So I’m in Washington again and this time I went back to Snoqualmie Falls and the Snoqualmie pass for a snowshoeing excursion. Now that I can cross snowshoeing off my list of things to do, I have to recommend it to all of you! Talk about fun – I’m definitely going back when I move up here next month. Snow might be melted by then but next year is just around the corner. Snowshoe rentals are not super-expensive, costing only $17 for the day. The State of Washington creates ‘sno-parks’ which are nothing more then parking lots plowed out of the snow cover and maintained for the duration of the winter. You have to pay a $10.00 fee to access these parks but they offer a pristine snow scape, ripe for the exploring. [Read more…]
